Statement on CFB's Election Day Compliance Checks

06/22/2021

NYC Campaign Finance Board Executive Director Amy Loprest issued the following statement on compliance checks that the CFB conducts on Election Day:

"The CFB is visiting poll sites and campaign offices in all five boroughs today as part of our routine audit process to ensure that campaigns are in compliance with the rules of the public funds program. The CFB interviews campaign workers only, not voters, and workers are free to decline to be interviewed. The interviewers are contractors hired by the CFB and visit each poll site and campaign office briefly. We do not maintain a presence at any location throughout the day. The focus of these spot-checks is to assure public funds are being spent appropriately. We always appreciate feedback on these interactions and adjust our procedures as needed.

"From educating New Yorkers about Ranked Choice Voting to administering the city's landmark campaign finance program, the CFB wears many hats when it comes to our local elections. Auditing campaigns to assure they are in compliance with the rules of the campaign finance program are an important part of our work, and that includes these interviews. The public funds we administer help candidates run robust campaigns that are free from special interest influence."
