In the few months I have been in office, I have been fortunate to
serve the neighborhoods of Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen/ Clinton, Greenwich Village and parts
of SoHo and Murray Hill. Together we have accomplished a number of important goals.
After the City tried to renege on a promise to create a new park at
Hudson and Clarkson Streets, I worked with the Pier, Park and Playground Association and
others to hold the City to its word and got the park we were promised.
With my Council colleagues, I advocated against proposed budget cuts and
restored funding to libraries, anti-eviction services, among other programs, and continued
efforts to equalized co-op/condo taxes. And the Council allocated $16 million to enhance
senior services, including a $4 million fund for Naturally Occurring Retirement
Communities, like our own Penn South.
We still have plenty of work to do. While I have secured some
commitments toward opening the dormant Chelsea Recreation Center, we still are far from
the $15 million needed to open the Center. And, over-development is threatening our
neighborhoods.
With the creation of a Hudson River Park Trust, we must remain vigilant
about seeing that this long awaited park is true open space. Next year, the City Council
must renewing rent regulations — it is critical that we start working on this now.
Unfortunately, recently the Council passed an anti-tenant/pro-landlord law, which
decreases landlords’ responsibility to clean up dangerous lead paint. I am proud to say
that I was one of fifteen Councilmembers who opposed this bill.
I am committed to continuing my work on behalf of tenants, open space,
and community gardens, and doing ALL I can to improve the schools in this district, as
well as our educational system Citywide.
