I’m running for the
Council because I want to preserve the anti-crime
and quality-of-life reforms of the Giuliani years —
and to build on them by fighting for educational
quality; for affordable services for our seniors;
and to preserve our environment.
There’s going to be a lot of pressure on the new
Mayor from special interests to return to the failed
Dinkins policies that wrote off our communities in
Northeast Queens as “the outer boroughs.” We’re
going to need a representative who will fight for
the interests of our neighborhoods. I’ll be that
kind of representative.
As the head of one of New York’s leading anti-crime
and neighborhood quality-of-life groups, I worked to
uphold “Megan’s Law,” to limit parole for violent
felons, to pass Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn’s
“Baby AIDS” bill, and to get guns out of schools,
porn shops out of neighborhoods, abused children
away from crack-addicted parents, and the violent
mentally ill off the sidewalks and into treatment. I
started this bipartisan group with Eliot Spitzer
before his election as New York Attorney General.
As your City Councilman, I’ll fight to prevent
oversaturation of group homes and other facilities,
and to eliminate “as of right” zoning for churches
in residential areas.
And, as the father of two young kids in the public
school system, I’ll make education my first
priority. I’ll fight for expanded school
construction, for high standards and an end to
“social promotion,” and to limit the excesses of
bilingual education.
Mayor Giuliani has called me “a leader in the fight
for the safety and quality of life of our
neighborhoods.” I’m also honored to have the
support of Senator Frank Padavan and Councilman Mike
Abel, and I intend to work as hard as they have for
our community.
