In three-and-one-half years in office, I have worked to improve the quality of life for those who live in the communities I represent.

Education is a major concern to me. By the end of the FY 2002 budget cycle, I will have obtained funds for computers for every elementary and intermediate school in this Council District. I also supported the construction of science and computer labs at New Utrecht High School, and I am working to find sites for new schools in District 20. I worked to arrange the move of District 20’s administrative offices into a new site; this will free up 20 additional classrooms throughout the district.

Our older citizens are also of great concern to me. My mother lives in our neighborhood, so I know the problems that older adults face. I have obtained additional funding for senior groups. I arranged for the funding of a new free “loop” van service that serves seniors along Third and Fifth Avenues between 69th Street and 95th Street. I also secured $250,000 for BridgeLine, a new program designed to provide referral and information services to older adults. I have also been trying to bring additional senior citizen housing to our community, and I will continue these efforts.

I have also been working on the transportation needs of our neighborhoods. I have worked to extend express service into the late night hours, and I am continuing to work to establish a weekend express bus service. When the MTA reduced express bus service, I worked to get the buses reinstated. I am also working to re-route the N train back over the Manhattan Bridge.

It has been my privilege to serve our community. I ask for your support so that I can continue to work to make our neighborhoods a better place to live.
