Sara Gonzalez has dedicated her whole life to community service. She has lived,
worked and raised both her children in Southwest Brooklyn where she has fought
for the rights of the poor, the homeless, working families, children and women.
Sara spearheaded the movement for AIDS education and prevention as co-founder
of Discipleship’s HIV intervention program in 1988. Her strength and compassion
resulted in the transformation of thousands of lives in the community through
the securing of housing, drug treatment, family intervention counseling,
employment preparation and health services acquisition.
As the current chairperson of Community Board #7, Sara has worked for
environmental justice, waterfront development, health care, and greater board
involvement in community issues. Board #7 is a more vibrant, essential
community entity because of her leadership.
Sara is also the Executive Director of Hispanic Young People’s Alternatives, a
community based organization dedicated to fostering youth leadership and
educational programming as well as senior services. Her leadership has
maintained HYPA as a lead and respected organization in the community. Sara’s
work with the community extends to all cultures, as she has fostered
collaborations with the Chinese American Planning Council in an afterschool
Beacon program and summer day camp.
Sara’s roots in the community are deep. Her husband of 30 years, Eliezer, grew
up in the community and has worked at Maimonides hospital for 20 years. Both
her children graduated from Telecommunications High School and she was educated
in community schools, including Fort Hamilton High School, P.S. 314 and P.S. 1.
Sara Gonzalez is experienced and committed. Sara will be representative of the
desires of the community, not politics, whether of a supposed new or of the old
as usual varieties. Electing her will usher in a new era of community
initiative to the City Council!
