I know
about our community’s needs firsthand. The East
Side is where I grew up, attended public school,
and am now facing the challenges - and rewards -
of raising a child. It was to address these needs
of our community, and to improve the quality of
life for all East Siders, that I went into politics.
In 18 months in office, I have:
- Obtained funding for capital improvements
and technological upgrades for every public
school in the district;
- Found a building and obtained funding for
a new East Side college-preparatory high school;
- Exposed wasteful practices by the Board of
Education;
- Provided millions of dollars of funding for
the creation of the Stuyvesant Cove Park, a
new playground and state of the art playing
field at 96th and Lexington, and the renovation
of St. Vartan Park;
- Worked with the Police Department to crack
down on reckless bicycle riders;
- Enacted legislation to curb noise pollution;
and
- Obtained funding for many cultural institutions
and community groups.
But much remains to be done. Building a Second Avenue
subway. Protecting rent stabilization. Negotiating
responsible budgets that protect the City’s future
fiscal health. Raising teacher salaries to attract
and retain well-qualified teachers.
In 1999, I ran a positive campaign on my record
and the issues. I’m proud to have won nearly 70%
of the vote, the endorsement of the New York Times,
and overwhelming support from East Side Democrats.
I hope I can count on your support again.
