My run for City Council is the culmination
of my life long commitment. Our community needs
a role model, I am that role model: I was raised
by a single mother on welfare, lived in a foster
home, attended our public schools, graduated from
Harvard Law School, and returned to my community.
Today I teach our children, defend our cab drivers,
our tenants, our immigrants, and our senior citizens.
We need someone who can effectively FIGHT for
ALL of US IN OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITY.
MY PRIORITIES ARE:
EDUCATION: Reform and rationalize aid formulas
to provide equitable educational experiences to
our children.
HOUSING: Maintain rent control and stabilization
programs. Reform the tax code to punish “absentee
landlords” and return abandoned property
to the active housing market.
RACIAL AND ECONOMIC EQUALITY: Prevent anti-immigrant
legislation and discrimination; prevent cuts to
local programs such as Home Attendant services,
local hospitals, libraries, community centers.
Expand AIDS and cultural diversity programs.
IMPROVE TRAIN SERVICE: Eliminate the preposterous
MTA practice of skipping YOUR stop on the 1/9
train ONLY above 137th Street.
NYC MINIMUM WAGE: Require large corporations taking
millions of city funds to hire their employees
at a living wage.
TICKET QUOTA SYSTEM: Stop the unjust ticket quota
system that penalizes our hard working drivers.
TAXES: Eliminate the unincorporated business tax
paid by the small business-owners of our bodegas,
salons, multiservices, restaurants.
ENVIRONMENT: Encourage innovative public and private
partnerships to improve our environment.
