I believe that the people of the Northeast
Bronx deserve a council member who will deliver
for us, serve honestly, and be a role model for
our children.
As a working mother, I am concerned about the
lack of affordable day care. If elected, I will
seek more childcare funding for the Northeast
Bronx. I am determined to help provide the best
education for our children: computer technology
for all students; more teachers and reading specialists;
and expanded after school tutoring and activities.
Severe overcrowding and safety in schools must
be addressed. I led the fight that stopped the
closing of PS 153 and supported the new K-8 school
to be built near Boston Secor Houses.
I am already working to revitalize White Plains
Road and other commercial strips. The increase
in malls and superstores in the Northeast Bronx,
high taxes, and inadequate planning are killing
our shopping strips and making traffic more dangerous.
Revitalizing neighborhood shopping areas will
remain an important priority for me.
I have fought against “hot sheet” motels
in our neighborhoods and pressed for graffiti
cleanup and beautification projects. I will continue
these efforts in the Council. As Director of Congressman
Engel’s Co-Op city office, I worked to make our
neighborhoods safer: I got more police out of
their cars and onto street patrols and strengthened
security at Co-Op City garages. Arrested in the
Diallo protest, I will continue my work for better
police training and improved police/community
relations.
I have served as a member of the Board of Directors
of Riverbay Corporation, President of the PS 153
Parents Association, and Director of St. Joseph’s
After School Programs. I have won awards from
the N.A.A.C.P., Bronx House, Riverbay Corporation,
and Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
I am proud to be endorsed by Congressman Eliot
L. Engel and New York State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson.
With your help, I will bring my effective community
activism to the City Council.
