I’m a lifelong New Yorker — I grew up
in Washington Heights, attended public schools
and CUNY. I began a career in public service on
my Community Board and was eventually elected
to the Assembly.
I’m running for Public Advocate because the job
is all about making government work better — exactly
what I’ve done throughout my career — as an activist,
a legislator and an organizer.
This campaign is about generations:
A generation of New Yorkers who developed our
neighborhoods, raised families, and have chosen
to remain in the communities that they built.
A generation of New Yorkers — teachers and firefighters,
nurses and librarians — coming into their prime,
making decisions vital to our City: whether -
as working families - they will STAY in our City.
A generation of NEW New Yorkers - from Central
and Latin America, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe
- struggling with these same decisions in a new
world: livable housing, safe neighborhoods, good
schools.
My message to all generations of New Yorkers:
we must continue to work together to ensure our
City’s growth.
Just as a lowered crime rate and an exceptional
school system is an economic growth engine; affordable
housing and effective rapid transit are economic
growth engines. And, yes, efficient government
is an economic growth engine. But we must do more
to ensure that all New Yorkers regardless of race,
religion, gender or sexual orientation share in
that growth.
The Public Advocate’s Office is the most innovative
— and can be the most effective - elected office
in America. As Public Advocate, I’ll use all available
resources to ensure that our City innovates, and
shine a light on the successes created by government
and citizens working together.
