An independent voice, a sincere, knowledgeable and thoughtful public servant, and someone who will represent the needs of every community in the district - that’s the kind of City Council Member we deserve. My record shows I will be that kind of leader.
I am a product of Spanish Harlem and our local public schools. I earned college scholarships, worked in the private sector as a financial analyst and in the public sector as the first Latino to serve as Assistant Deputy Comptroller for the Office of the State Comptroller. Throughout my career, I devoted time to tutoring children in my community, directing an after-school program, and serving as a member of Community School Board, District 4 and am 25-year member of the Board of Directors at Union Settlement Association, a social service organization in East/Spanish Harlem.
As a champion of education reform, I believe the City Council can and must do more to address the needs of public schools in our district: to lower the costs of construction and school repair, to make the classroom the priority not the bureaucracy, and to ensure that changes in the educational system are made with parental and community participation.
Even in times of fiscal strain, we have an obligation to provide critical services: to preserve local and school-based health clinics, to increase senior support services by expanding programs funded by public and private sources, to build affordable housing and fight rent increases, and to assist local small businesses.
Through my experience in financial management, I know we can find additional City funds by cutting government waste, reforming the way goods and services are purchased, and setting clear priorities. As your City Council Member, I will refuse to balance the budget on the backs of working people, our families and local small businesses. I will make sure that our district for once gets our fair share of services, and that all our residents have a voice.
