GETTING THINGS DONE. For
thirty years, I have fought for the people of New
York. I’m not a career politician, I’m a woman who
has devoted my life to public service. I’ve worked
with four mayors including Ed Koch, my supporter,
led major non-profit organizations, started innovative
public programs, and raised a family with my husband
Victor Gotbaum.
Now, I want to be your advocate, putting the power
of the Public Advocate’s Office to work for all
New Yorkers, answering questions, investigating
complaints, and fighting for better government.
I have a broad new vision of an office enabling
New Yorkers to gain access to their government,
and fixing problems before they become crises.
As head of the Police Foundation, I secured life-saving
bulletproof vests for every police officer in the
city, when others said it was impossible. I started
New York’s first program to provide low-cost transportation
for the elderly and the disabled. I transformed
the dying New-York Historical Society into a vibrant
cultural institution. And, as Parks Commissioner,
I refused to let budget cuts hurt the parks, and
instead found ways to improve the quality of parks
in all boroughs — including a pioneering welfare-to-work
program, training people for real jobs paying real
wages.
As Public Advocate, I will act while others just
talk. I will work to ensure that every working family
and eligible child receives health care. I will
reach out to seniors, so that they receive the benefits
that are rightfully theirs. I will speed the creation
of schools and affordable housing. I will listen
to and fight for all New Yorkers, like I always
have.
