Globalization demands
that we produce an education system, which adequately
prepares our children to be able to function in
a global economy. This is why it is the most important
issue facing our country and demands the most attention.
If our education system fails to prepare them for
the academic demands that will be essential to compete
in a global workforce, they will be at a competitive
disadvantage.
Bronx County is the poorest county with the worst
schools in New York State. I believe there is a
correlation between poverty and low reading and
math scores. One of the best ways to eradicate poverty
is to provide quality education to our children.
When politicians want to avoid responding to difficult
problems, they create boards, which tend to be bureaucratic
and ill prepared to tackle complex problems. This
is why I believe that we must make our elected officials
directly responsible for education. I would like
to abolish the Board of Education and replace it
with a commissioner who is directly responsible
for Education. This allows voters to hold the Mayor
and City Council responsible for providing the necessary
resources for producing a functional educational
system. This alone will not solve our problems in
providing a quality education; parents must become
more involved in their children’s education and
we must attract more people to pursue a career in
education, by providing better pay and benefits.
