1. What is the most important issue in Council District 13 you would address if elected?
Safety is my top priority. I want to reduce crime in the 45th and 49th precincts. I believe it is crucial that we address our city's dwindling police manpower, which has seen a decrease of 7000 police officers since 2001.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
As Chairman of the Transportation Committee, I want to work with the MTA to increase subway station accessibility for the disabled. I also plan to work closely with the Department of Transportation to address the traffic issues our neighborhoods face. One of my top transportation priorities has always been safety for all road users. I will continue to fight for more traffic improvements such as speed humps, signals, and increased enforcement.
I believe that the city must freeze water rates. I will urge the new mayor to seek new methods of funding the water system, instead of burdening property owners with a yearly tax hike.
We need to raise the income cap for senior citizen tax exemptions, for renters and owners. Allowing improved eligibility for these benefits will ensure that more seniors can afford to stay in their homes.
The 13th Council District is a beautiful and vibrant place - and I want to keep it that way. I will continue to advocate for park and tree maintenance, graffiti removal, and for better education in community schools.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
My 35 years of experience in community and civic life has given me an intricate knowledge of city government. In addition, my experience as a legislator and Chair of the Transportation Committee has seen an unprecedented 33 pieces of legislation passed to become law, many of which I have been the prime sponsor.
