As Borough President I will make sure
that Brooklyn never takes a back seat to Manhattan
or any other part of New York City. As a State
Senator for the past 23 years, I have worked to
get our fair share of school funding from the
state, and for hundreds of thousands of dollars
to revitalize neighborhoods, improve housing and
provide opportunities for our children. In the
State Senate I worked to secure a 35% increase
in state funding for New York’s public schools
over the last four years.
I founded the Flatbush Tenants’ Council, which
is now the largest tenants’ organization in Brooklyn,
and I have fought to preserve and strengthen rent
regulations for my entire career. I founded the
Senior Citizens League of Flatbush, the Fenimore
Street Senior Center and the Ebbets Field Houses
Senior Center. I founded the Brooklyn Women’s
Coalition, a multi-racial group of neighborhood
activists. And I sponsor two of the largest free
outdoor concert series in New York City, bringing
joy to hundreds of thousands of Brooklyn families.
I want to take my experience working for the people
of Brooklyn and my vision for our future to Borough
Hall.
I’m known for getting things done for the people
I’ve represented. When someone calls me for help
with a problem, they get me on the phone and they
get help. I’ll continue to be accessible and to
get things done for people as Borough President.
Having grown up in Brooklyn and lived in public
housing, I understand the struggles and the dreams
of Brooklyn families trying to make ends meet
and raise their children today. I understand the
challenges facing our Borough, and I will provide
the vision and the leadership to meet them.
