Richard Jannaccio has
earned a reputation fighting for Flushing. Battling
City Hall and greedy developers, Richard successfully
led neighbors to ban a supermarket on Sanford Avenue.
On Elder Avenue, Richard organized neighbors to
halt construction of a Mobil MiniMart until existing
toxic waste was cleaned up.
Richard has led efforts to clean up downtown Flushing
and reclaim the sidewalks confiscated by food markets,
resulting in more than a dozen fines and one license
surrender—only the beginning. He has successfully
organized residents and merchants to convert two-way
streets into one-way, easing traffic gridlock.
Richard has lobbied for homeowners, coop dwellers
and tenants. He has fought for Open and Honest Government,
exposing Community Board 7’s violation of Open Meetings
laws. Richard went to City Hall to support term
limits.
Richard’s commitment to protecting the environment
and public health spans more than 25 years. Deeply
concerned about epidemics of asthma, allergies,
and cancer, Richard has protested increased air
traffic, demanded clean-air buses for Queens, filed
complaints against polluters, opposed garbage transfer
stations in Flushing, and protested the reckless
spraying of Malathion. He is committed to fighting
runaway costs, from water bills to prescription
drugs.
As co-chair of the Fort Totten Advisory Board, Richard
has demanded removal its toxic wastes. Richard,
a state-certified biology teacher, has exposed the
School Construction Authority for picking inappropriate
sites for new schools.
Richard has earned his stripes by listening to the
people, bringing them together, and fighting for
the improvements they want. He brings to the City
Council a strong science background, a commitment
to public service, and a record of accomplishment
for the Flushing community. He will represent all
the people. We all benefit from cleaning up our
neighborhoods, protecting our health, ensuring our
safety, and improving our quality of life.
Richard Jannaccio is for the people, uncontrolled
by political machines, power brokers, or special
interests.
