I am Imam Aziz Bilal, born
in Selma, Alabama. I’ve been married for 29 years
and GOD has blessed my wife Amina and I with four
beautiful children. For over thirty years, I have
been a community activist in the South Jamaica
area. My campaign theme is: “The candidate
for all the people.” I understand the need
for effective, responsive government and the importance
of having community leaders in the City Council
who will address the needs of our community and
defend the rights of its people.
Examples of my community activism include; on
May 30th, 2001, I led a protest demonstration
against Perini Construction and Port Authority
at the site of the AirTrain Sutphin Blvd Station
to fight for jobs and minority business contracts
for our district.
In recent years, I’ve personally led campaigns
against drugs in our neighborhoods. We held night
vigils in areas where drugs were sold. We endured
dangerous conditions and threats of violence.
After some months the drug dealers moved on. Now
children play in the streets and seniors move
safely through the neighborhood.
We have a tremendous amount of talent and untapped
leadership in the 28th District and for far too
long their voices have not been heard. I will
work hard to include and involve the people of
the 28th district in the political process and
insure that residents of my District get there
fair share of the billions of dollars of construction
monies that flow through our communities.
Finally, an issue close to my heart is the crisis
of our young men. I am a counselor and meet our
young men daily. There is much more our elected
officials can do to address this crisis.
