In my years working
for Chuck Schumer, I learned from a master how to
get results in government. As the only candidate
with legislative experience, I have specific ideas
for making our neighborhoods even better places
to live:
Creating First-Rate Schools: From my own
experience teaching, I know that students learn
more in small classes. Early grades should be
capped at 20 students per class. We also need
to pay competitive salaries that will attract
and retain excellent teachers for our kids.
A Greener Brooklyn: Parks are a necessity
in dense communities like ours. On the Community
Board 2 Parks Committee, I have fought for more
green space. I want to build waterfront parks
in Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and Greenpoint/Williamsburg.
More Affordable Housing: One-quarter of
all City renters pay more than half their income
in rent. The City needs to make the necessary
investments to keep housing affordable.
A Cleaner Urban Environment: Brooklynites
suffer more particle-emission-related illnesses
than any other NYS county. We need tighter regulations
for power plants, tougher roadside inspection
for trucks, and a complete phase-out of diesel
buses.
Clean Government: We must break the stranglehold
of special interests and the party machine. We
should forbid Councilmembers from taking outside
income from lobbying firms, and take away the
Council Speaker’s ability to force lockstep voting.
