“Bill” Saunders
has demonstrated his commitment to advancing our
community. He currently serves as the Democratic
District Leader for the 57th Assembly District and
previously served as a Special Assistant and Aid
to State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, managing
her successful campaigns in 1994, 1996, and 1998.
He served as Chairman of the Community Action Committee
of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Youth in Action Program
and conducted one of its most successful voter registration
drives. Over 5,000 new voters were added to the
rolls in Bedford-Stuyvesant. As Treasurer and then
President of the 80-86 Housing Corporation, he took
a leadership role in building two 91 unit senior
citizens homes: the Knox/Molle houses in Fort Greene,
and the Elijah Smith Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
He and the corporation were also responsible for
the complete rehabilitation of 395 Clinton Avenue.
“Bill” has the background and experience
necessary to be a positive force in City Hall. He
is a graduate of Empire State College, with a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Political Science. He had a thirty-year
career with the United States Postal Service, retiring
as Director of Safety for Manhattan and the Bronx.
He was also active in the National Alliance of Postal
and Federal Employees of the Bronx and Manhattan,
Local 813, where he served as a delegate, then Secretary
and First Vice President. In 1985, he served as
an Assistant Director in the re-election campaign
of Mayor Koch. In 1990 and 1992, he was Campaign
Manager for the Honorable Earl Johnson. He is a
Prince Hall Mason and helped to found The Source
of New York, a group that provides scholarships
to promising young Black artists. He asks for your
VOTE so that he can continue to strive for the community.
