Born in Puerto Rico, Mr. Mateo came to
the United States in 1969 after having graduated
with honors from high school. Mateo is married
to the former Gladys Roman. The Mateos and their
children reside in the East New York section of
Brooklyn where they have lived since 1970.
In 1972, he began to study Liberal Arts at Kingsborough
Community College in Brooklyn. Shortly thereafter,
he transferred to City College where he studied
Sociology.
Mateo has had over 25 years of varied and enriching
work experience, much of which was acquired while
he attended college. He has worked as a clerk,
production worker, production and warehouse supervisor
and as an admissions officer. In addition, he
has taught Drama and Physical Education to young
adults.
Since he arrived in New York City, Mateo has
been deeply involved in community affairs. He
has been involved in cultural, social, political
as well as charitable activities in his East New
York community. In addition to his work with El
Museo del Barrio and Boricua College, Mateo, along
with other community leaders, founded El Teatro
Cuatro, a theatre group which led to El Festival
Latino in New York.
Mr. Mateo’s dedication to the children of his
community led him to run for the local Community
School Board. As a School Board member he has
championed the causes of the parents in his community
school district. His desire is to continue to
serve his community, in a broader role, as a member
of the New York City Council.
