Craig Hammerman is a third-generation
Brooklynite, moving to Park Slope after college
where he currently resides. Since 1990 Hammerman’s
worked for Brooklyn CB6 having a population of
over 102,000 residents; its neighborhoods include
Carroll Gardens/South Brooklyn, Cobble Hill, Columbia
Street District, Gowanus and Park Slope.
As District Manager, Hammerman’s been the community’s
advocate on every major issue affecting the district.
As agency head for the government office, he supports
the Community Board, administers a City budget,
provides constituent services and serves diverse
socioeconomic, ethnocultural and religious communities.
Under his tenure, CB6 has enjoyed a citywide reputation
as an effective voice in government.
As an activist, Hammerman’s been a leader in
many fields. He helped defeat the BNY incinerator
and led his communities to become top recycling
district. Hammerman helped plan the RHCJC, a decentralized
criminal justice facility. He continues teaching
and lectures on topics related to City government;
his education goal is to de-emphasize the politics
of education and re-emphasize the process of educating.
As Council Member, Hammerman’s City government
experience will be invaluable given the unprecedented
turnover of officials. His career hallmark is
putting issues before politics and people before
partisanship. He’s credited with providing effective
leadership empowering citizens, cutting through
red tape, and bringing people together. While
other officials will be learning the City’s budget,
land use procedures, and municipal service delivery,
Hammerman will hit the ground running in the Council.
Hammerman’s been endorsed by Borough President
Howard Golden, Fiorello La Guardia Good Government
Committee and NOW - Brooklyn Chapter (additional
endorsements pending). He offers “a new breed
of politics” based on professional public
service and grassroots citizen involvement, independent
of traditional clubhouses, partisan politics-as-usual
and special interests.
