Public Hearing Tomorrow: New Yorkers Discuss Their Issues Voting in June 2020 Election

06/30/2020

The New York City Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC) holds a virtual hearing tomorrow, Wednesday, July 1, to hear testimony from New Yorkers about their experience voting in the June primary election.

RSVP for the hearing to receive a link to the Zoom meeting or submit testimony. The meeting will also be streamed on Facebook Live via the NYC Votes page.

Issues with voting by mail and in-person were widely reported by New Yorkers on social media and in the news last week. Over 700,000 city voters requested mail-in ballots for the primary election after Gov. Cuomo signed an executive order allowing all eligible voters to request mail-in ballots. The governor and state legislature have not extended universal voting by mail for the presidential election in November.

This hearing provides New Yorkers with an opportunity to report any issues they experienced in the primary election to city officials, election administrators, and voting advocates. NYC Votes staff will discuss potential recommendations to improve the voter experience in the November elections.

While there is limited time to testify during the hearing, all New Yorkers may submit written testimony for the public record. All testimony will be collected and shared with the NYC Board of Elections.

VAAC consists of nine members who advise the NYC Campaign Finance Board and its nonpartisan voter engagement initiative, NYC Votes. The committee recommends legislative and administrative changes to improve elections in New York City.

NYC Votes is the nonpartisan voter engagement initiative of the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) and its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC). In addition to promoting voter registration, participation, and civic engagement in New York City through its many programs and partnerships, NYC Votes sponsors the city’s official Debate Program and produces the citywide Voter Guide.
