Gerson’s record of effective leadership has brought
together a broad coalition. C. Virginia Fields,
Ed Koch, Kathryn Freed, United Democratic Organization
of Chinatown, Downtown Independent Democrats, Stonewall
Democratic Club, Village Reform Democratic Club
and countless others are enthusiastically supporting
Gerson’s campaign.
The son of a public school teacher and a 30 year
resident of Mitchell-Lama housing, Alan will make
sure that Lower Manhattan has all the necessary
new schools to meet its growing population. Alan
has a strong commitment to building and maintaining
affordable, livable communities throughout Lower
Manhattan. He has already achieved so much for all
Lower Manhattan:
- Opened an evening program and created a swimming
team for young people;
- Worked with senior centers to expand services
and to start work on an affordable assisted
living senior residence;
- Provided legal assistance to low income tenants;
- Got work started on the new Hudson River
Park;
- Reduced noise from motorcycles and noisy
bars;
- Initiated the Heart Defibrillation Public
Health Pilot program;
- Devised traffic calming and diesel pollution
reduction efforts;
- Advocated for women’s rights, women’s health
needs and the right to choose;
- Supported union organizing drives and fought
unsafe work conditions;
- Fought bias and hate crimes based on sexual
orientation or other characteristics;
- Maintained a social service center for homeless
adults;
- Worked to bus routes and extended bus service;
- Established shelters for runaway teenagers;
- Worked with police to improve and expand
community patrolling.
