As a community activist
for most of the 32 years, my family (husband and
three children have lived in Springfield Gardens.
I have actively worked and dedicate my time to improving
my community. I have volunteered in my children’s
schools. I helped to reverse the decision to place
a multiplex movie theater across the street from
one of our neighborhood schools. It did not create
a suitable environment for serious learning.
As a City Council Person, I will be committed to
tackling some of our most important problems -improving
our schools, expanding mass transit, create affordable
housing and in my community alleviate flooding in
the Southeast Queens area.
EDUCATION: My first priority will be to propose
a “Super Fund” for our schools, to help
ensure quality education for our children. Certified
teachers and increased salaries are necessary to
eliminate the flight of our teachers to other counties.
Building more schools to keep up with the growing
population and to alleviate overcrowding in the
classrooms is also another pressing concern.
FLOODING: Another priority. There has been some
improvement, but when it rains, backed-up sewers
and drains continue to cause flooding and other
property damage.
TRANSPORTATION: Public transportation needs to be
improved in the outer boroughs. New York City subways
do not reach much of the outer boroughs, and commuters
must take Long Island Railroad into Jamaica to catch
a train into Manhattan. The Rockaways is a part
of the district where the trains come infrequently.
