I have never been able to walk away from
a problem without doing something about it. For
over twenty-five years, I have worked to make
the Upper West Side a better place to live. My
leadership has resulted in a greater sense of
community, safer streets, more beautiful parks
and open spaces, improved landlord/tenant relations
and a better education for our children. Over
and over again, I have shown that vision, collaboration
and courage can lead to great accomplishments.
As a block association and tenant leader, I believe
the Upper West Side should remain a neighborhood
of diverse residents and businesses. I have rallied
the community to be vigilant against over-development
and the sale of air-rights.
I have been a resident of this District since
1973, and have fought to reverse the gradual decline
of its bus and subway systems due to overcrowding,
poor service and insufficient maintenance. I led
Friends of Verdi Park in 1981, helping to save
the landmarked kiosk and park from the MTA’s bulldozers.
And I am now battling to obtain wider, safer platforms.
For the last five years, as a member, and chairman
(1996-97) of Community School Board 3, I have
been working hard for Public Education. We must
ensure its success for the sake of our children
and our democracy. I have labored to protect at-risk
children and help them succeed. I have been fighting
for small class sizes, quality teachers and school-based
social services.
In over two decades I’ve won large and small
battles on behalf of students, subway users, tenants,
gays and lesbians, seniors and public space. My
successes are powerful evidence of the experience,
vision and commitment that make me the best candidate
to serve Council District 6.
