I am pleased to be a pro-choice Democrat
- Liberal candidate for the 6th Council District.
I grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey, a small
Quaker town outside of Philadelphia, and have
made my home on the Upper West Side since 1995.
I support continued measures for affordable quality
housing and community-friendly development, as
well as investment in community and public services
including our libraries, parks, health services,
help for PWAs, and reliable police and fire services
that make the Upper West Side one of the best
places to bring up a family in New York City.
I have worked in education for ten years. My career
has included management, marketing, delivery of
national educational services, teaching, directing
teacher training, directing development of educational
centers, information management systems, and live,
video, software, and online educational programs.
Currently I am working on a Random House/Princeton
Review book titled “The Girl’s Guide to the
SAT,” that addresses the gender gap in education
and offers practical advice to teenagers.
I am concerned with the increasing classroom time
used to teach to the “high stakes tests”
at the expense of actual learning. I support greater
investment in school infrastructure, and teacher
salaries, including merit-based bonuses. I call
the renewal of the Board of Education, implementation
of school vouchers, and piloting limited private
initiatives such as the proposed Edison Project
takeover of our city’s failing schools. My unique
education proposal is an annual survey of students
and parents, most of which will be published online
similar to a “Consumer Reports” that
will aid in directing future investment.
I have contributed time and money for Democrats
such as Jim McGreevey in New Jersey and Senator
Bill Bradley. I have worked for the STOP AIDS
project, and most recently have built homes for
Habitat for Humanity in Jamaica, Queens.
