As a leader of the
CUNY student movement in the early 90s, I organized
demonstrations in defense of affordable higher education
for poor and working families. I have taught in
NYC public schools the past seven years. I founded
the Dominican Youth Union and Dominicans 2000, two
organizations serving our youth and community at
large. I recently led efforts by teachers, parents
and community members against Edison Corporation,
which sought to privatize four of our public schools.
As Councilmember, I will continue fighting for quality
education, to build new schools, reduce class size,
increase teacher salaries, and improve teacher recruitment.
My background as an activist and educator has prepared
me to represent the Washington Heights, Inwood and
Marble Hill community as a progressive advocate
and legislator. I pledge that as your Councilperson
I will fight for our community’s development by
promoting legislation and supporting programs that:
- preserve affordable housing;
- enable construction of new housing and renovation
of abandoned and occupied buildings;
- foster constructive dialogue between the
community and its law enforcement agencies;
- target mistreatment and excessive force by
the police against civilians;
- sensitize people to ethnic, racial, religious,
sexual diversity, and gender equity;
- strengthen domestic violence laws;
- guarantee universal healthcare coverage and
widen access;
- protect workers’ rights to unionize, to collectively
bargain for better wages and living conditions;
- defend small businesses;
- improve elderly care;
- establish amnesty laws for the undocumented;
- monitor and improve the environment in our
neighborhoods.
I am endorsed by the SEIU, 1199, the Working Families
Party, UNITE!, ACORN,100 Blacks in Law Enforcement,
the Latino Police Officers Association, and community
advocates like Dr. Rafael Lantigua, Norman Siegel,
Rosario Cepín, Rev. Luis Barrios, Mónica
Santana, Junot Díaz, Anthony Miranda, Míriam
Mejia, Eric Adams and Hiram Monserrate. Together
we can create a new and diverse leadership in which
women and youth are significantly represented.
