Candidate Statement

The State Comptroller has the power to fix New York\'s most serious fiscal problems. Unfortunately, the incumbent was hand-picked by Shelly Silver to fill a vacancy—despite the objections of every major newspaper in the State, because he is “totally and thoroughly unqualified for the job.” DiNapoli returned that favor to his Albany allies by protecting the status quo when reforms are badly needed.

I am an independent outsider, a public finance and pension expert, and beholden to nobody in Albany. I would use the powers of this Office on behalf of ordinary New Yorkers by unilaterally banning the Pension Fund from investing in hedge funds, which have charged the incumbent over $6 billion in fees while performing poorly for retirees; fixing the dysfunctional budget process by refusing to certify any unsound budget; singlehandedly ending backdoor borrowing; and forensically auditing the MTA to uncover problems before the subway breaks down.
