Herman Badillo will
bring back standards to the public education system
in New York, preserve the city’s economic vitality
by lowering taxes, develop a strong business climate
with the creation of urban renewal programs, and
retain a zero-tolerance on criminal activity.
As chairman of City University of New York, Badillo
spearheaded a return to clear and rigorous standards-
he will do the same for public schools, putting
an end to passing students onto the next grade
who haven’t yet completed requirements for the
previous.
Whether it’s education or business, Badillo will
create the right incentives for success. That
means not rewarding failure. Opposing unnecessary
regulations that stifle competition, Badillo will
rid the city of excessive and complicated business
guidelines that depress the city’s local economy.
These rules hurt the city’s lower skilled workers
the most and ought to be eliminated when possible.
Continuing the war against crime initiated by
the Giuliani administration, Badillo supports
the training of large and culturally diverse police
force that has expertise in interacting with community
groups.
Also important, however, is the fact that Mr.
Badillo has served the public most of his life
and has the experience to implement these programs.
