The Green Party is
the only party that is part of a worldwide movement
working to bring about social justice and an environmentally
sustainable way of life. My commitment to the party
and its platform grows out of my working class childhood
in Brooklyn, years of teaching mothers on welfare
in the South Bronx and years of marching and organizing
to protect the environment. After working in offices
and as a waitress, I married, had a family and graduated
from college at age thirty-two. NYC gave me a superb
free education. I want that same education for all
New Yorkers. New problems sometimes require new
solutions. But, an old solution, a well-funded free
public education system, can return the city to
the educational glory it once had.
Priorities for Greens include: reordering the
criminal justice system to prevent crime instead
of punishing it, ending racial profiling, establishing
a federal monitor to investigate police brutality,
increasing uniformed police foot patrols and legalizing
marijuana. Further, Greens would end corporate
welfare, enhance rent control and rent stabilization
laws, protect public education from privatization,
create affordable housing and increase open space.
Most importantly, we would stop the poisoning
of our air and water and food. Green solutions
to environmental problems include: ending the
spraying of pesticides, creating new sustainable
energy sources, and investing in public transportation
to make it more convenient, affordable, and less
polluting.
Finally, because corporate money controls the
Democratic and Republican Parties, neither of
them works for you. I will raise the issues that
they dare not discuss — I will work for you — and
I will not accept corporate contributions.
